MARQUETTE — Preservation of older homes, including the centerpiece of a well-known children’s book, has won three Marquette home owners Home improvement Awards. In the rental category, William and Sally Birch won the top prize for moving and renovating Dandelion Cottage at 440 E. Arch St. Formerly adjacent to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on East Ridge Street, the cottage was used by three young girls in the popular novel “Dandelion Cottage” by Marquette author Carroll Watson Rankin. Winning the Home Improvement Award in the residential category were Godfrey and Carrie Heitmeier for their home at 121 E. Hewitt Ave. The Commercial property award went to Gerald and Carol Pinkos for the expansion and renovation of an older home at 1025 N. Third St. into a business/ home combination.

MARQUETTE — Three pieces of property near St. Luke’s Hospital have been purchased to facilitate future expansion, the hospital’s board of trustees chairman, Lincoln B. Frazier, announced today with Howard B. Lehwald, administrator at St. Luke’s. Recently procured from the J.H. Green and Leo Glass families was one half of the block between College and Kaye Aves, extending 150 feet along the west side of Hebard Ct. Two pieces of land at the south-west corner of the hospital block also have been purchased for development purposes. This property lies at the northeast corner of the W. Magnetic-Lee St. intersection. During September and October, two houses located on the Magnetic-Lee property were removed and the area was graded for use as a temporary parking lot for employees and patients, St. Luke’s spokesmen indicated.
