While trends are not something that many people like to follow for their ephemerality, timeless fall trends are offering a new way to style your home for the cooler seasons.
As interior design trends emerge to meet the demands we are making of our homes, fall decor ideas and design trends in 2022 are looking towards creating a cozy, warm home for friends and family to gather and relax together after a difficult few years.
Here, designers have offered their insight into the top fall trends for 2022 so that you can create the ideal space this fall.
Fall trends 2022
Incorporating trends into your home does not need to be about fleeting decor items that might not have a place in your home the following year, instead, implement these timeless decorating ideas for schemes that will stand the test of time.
1. Use warm toned colors
While room color ideas are difficult to change with trends, we are seeing more timeless shades emerging through fall color scheme trends that will stand the test of time.
‘Saddle Stitch is a gorgeous, warm tan. It belongs to the neutral color family, but it is neutral with plenty of character. It’s very bold and saturated with lots of caramel undertones, but without being too bright or overpowering and it could be a real fashion statement for your walls,’ explains Justyna Korczynska, senior designer at Crown (opens in new tab).
‘It’s perfect to be used on its own throughout the room creating a cozy cocooning space. When used with warm off-whites and gentle light neutrals it can become a real statement shade and bring warmth to the room. In this combination, it would be perfect for sunny, south-facing rooms. It also performs very well in darker spaces where it would look best paired with even deeper, darker shades from a neutral color family. It pairs beautifully with all natural materials like wood, stone, clay, and natural fabrics like linen or jute. Saddle Stitch looks the best with soft warm lighting and is perfect for creating a relaxing ambient atmosphere in your home.’
Decorating with brown, or using color does not have to be just about painting, however, as Jodie Fried, co-founder of Armadillo (opens in new tab) reminds us. ‘This fall we are opting to hunker down with color. As the temperature cools and the indoors beckons, a charming palette of deep, rich hues will create the perfect ambiance for relaxation. Deep ruby reds and earthy crimsons make a bold statement by enveloping the room with instant warmth and comfort. Tactile rugs in forest green hues are our new neutral. Visually calming and soothing to touch, mix and match with earthy finishes. Forego trends and choose colors that resonate personally.’
‘If this trend isn’t for you, we are also seeing something very different coming through – sage green,’ adds Kelly Collins, interior designer and head of creative at Swyft (opens in new tab). ‘We have seen this color already this summer but it will carry on towards the end of this year and running into next. Pair this with darker greens and warmer/cozier textures to make a space feel cocooning. This color offers a sense of calm and tranquillity.’ Decorating with green is a timeless way to bring the outside into your home, and using it in numerous shades for a relaxing tonal scheme can make a room feel happy.
2. Incorporate vintage finds
‘This year has been all about mid-century modern, you can’t open an interiors magazine or search for furniture without this trend being on show,’ says Kelly. ‘However, towards the end of this year, we are going to see this Retro style move on and evolve into a more 70s feel. Think bold earthy tones still with strong pops of bright colors. Bold patterns are also back which obviously lends itself to this particular era.’
Decorating with vintage pieces is a great way to evoke an autumnal mood, with darker woods and distressed finishes playing into the more rugged look fall is associated with. When it comes to how to start decorating for fall, adding reclaimed pieces brings warmth and character to the space instantly making any house feel homey.
3. Consider natural finishes
Natural finishes have seen a rise in the last year, especially with looks such as the Organic Modern trend. ‘Embrace and combine a variety of natural materials to create a refreshing and inspirational space. From tremendously tactile natural grasses to wonderful woven fabrics, seek creative inspiration from your scheme.’ Suzanne Duin, founder of Maison Maison (opens in new tab).
‘Rich walnuts and soothing oaks are a wonderful way of bringing a touch of the outside and creating a warming, cozy feel in a kitchen that is perfect for the fall months,’ explains Bo Hellberg, CMO at String Furniture (opens in new tab). ‘Earthy tones are perfect for enriching a space and bringing in a calming feel to a home.’
‘We are inspired by interior design, architecture, and on occasion even landscape design,’ continues Niki Wright, co-founder of lights&lamps (opens in new tab). ‘A creative use of materials and form: perforated brickwork or satisfying topiary shapes. Lighting effects and colors found in architecture and nature: from buildings and materials we see in our favorite cities, stone colors, natural contrasts, and everyday shadows and shapes.’
4. Create a cozy home
One of the biggest fall trends is the desire to make a house look cozy. Cozy room ideas have become a necessity in many people’s homes as the weather cools down and we look to relax with friends and family over the winter period.
‘This relaxing and restorative look is all about creating a calming home retreat where you can kick back and recharge. Combining organic materials, natural textures, and a soft neutral palette across beautifully crafted furniture and accessories, each space has been designed to channel a mood that’s laid-back and liveable,’ recommends the head of creative at Barker and Stonehouse (opens in new tab), Claire Hornby.
From cozy living room ideas to cozy corner ideas, the cozy trend is perfect for making a sung home to find sanctuary from the hectic outside world.
5. Add pops of bold color
If redecorating your home in fall colors is too much for you, consider adding pops of festive color or colors to make a living room look cozy into your home for a warming, welcoming effect. There are a few ways that you could add color to space to warm it up for an autumnal appeal – consider changing out your soft furnishings or artwork to pieces grounded in earthy tones, or think about adding plants for fall color to your home and garden ideas.
‘Applying a color accent with a window dressing is a great way to include this trend, as the color appears bolder as light shines through the window, drawing attention to the window, which is often one of the most important features in the room.’ suggests Sally Denyer, digital marketing manager at Shutterly Fabulous (opens in new tab).
6. Arrange fall florals
Swapping summer blooms for fall-inspired florals is an easy fall trend idea that can be used to spruce up any part of the house for the fall season.
‘Keep it consistent,’ advises Audrey Scheck, from Audrey Scheck Design (opens in new tab), an Austin, Texas-based interior designer. ‘Use the same stem in each vessel instead of mixing various branches together. This keeps the arrangement looking timeless and cohesive while allowing the eye to seamlessly flow to other elements in the space.
‘Dried stems are perfect for fall because they tend to have a more muted color palette which coordinates nicely with any seasonal decor. Try swapping your floral stems with dried eucalyptus for some greenery and texture.’
Use arranged stems on fall table decor ideas for the perfect autumnal tablescaping, or add a warming touch to your fall mantel ideas. ‘Choosing saturated florals in deep reds, greens, and oranges will instantly make your space feel like Fall. Layer them alongside pumpkins and gourds to make it extra festive!’ Audrey continues.
As well as arranging fall florals, consider making your own fall wreath ideas to decorate your walls for fall or enhance your fall porch ideas.
7. Nature inspired patterns
In theme with the emphasis on natural materials, patterns inspired by nature are once again becoming increasingly popular.
‘While wooden floors have been center stage in many homes in the recent past, we have seen a dramatic rise in sales in the last few years, and in particular sales of patterned carpets. Fitted carpets are back, and back with gusto,’ says Lisa Conway, marketing manager at Brintons (opens in new tab), ‘We’ve seen an increase in a desire for nature-inspired shapes. Town or country, period or modern, natural inspired patterns look striking in any room and can be used to bring a color scheme or theme together.’
‘The most beautiful textures found in nature are also showcased to striking effect on the wall. From woven grasses to braided leaves and even leather: in the form of wallpaper, they shine brighter than ever,’ says managing director, Philippe Desart of Arte (opens in new tab) about their Textura wallpaper collection. They are complemented by the textures of rough or very finely woven linen and brilliant silk. The color palette of this vinyl collection ranges from timeless, soft hues to striking color tones.
