The Psychology of House Cleaning: How Tidying and Decorating Can Lead to Happiness

Pre-pandemic, it would be hard to imagine spending as much time as we do now in our homes. Our maxed-out spaces must function as offices, remote schools, gyms and all-day cafes (not always the chic kind). If these walls could talk, they would tell tales of togetherness but also boredom, frustration, and burn-out. In the early 20th century, Swiss theorist and psychiatrist Carl Jung proposed that the home is powerfully symbolic—and psychologically significant. Far more than shelter from the outside, our homes are a reflection of ourselves, our identity, he argued. How we construct this space is, therefore, closely connected to our inner narrative and mental state of mind. A…

Dunedin couple decorates whole house with mosaic tiles

Artists Carol Sackman and Blake White have a well-known and highly-visited home in Dunedin. Nicknamed the “mosaic house,” every room is decorated with tiles. DUNEDIN, Fla. — Carol Sackman and Blake White went to a garage sale in 1990 and eventually wound up buying the house. “We bought it in 1990,” Sackman said. “It was a cute little house, but it just wasn’t us. Remember This House | Elle Canada

Her new home in New York’s Hudson Valley is full of old favourites—an ode to all the things that, for her, spark joy. Take, for example, the Fornasetti chairs, which feature two African men in traditional Moroccan dress. “I think I first saw them in the early ’90s,” says Bridges. “They’re classic, and they just come with me wherever I go.” The residence, a tarblack beauty with nine-metre ceilings, is hard to miss, located as it is on a road of traditional farmhouses. It is the first home that Bridges has ever lived in that she built from scratch. She spent her childhood in an old stone house in Philadelphia,…

On the House: Sophie Heawood’s Property Binge. This week, homes for sale owned by famous writers

The homes of famous writers are always good for a nosey, to see the environments in which our greatest minds used to sit to write. That’s dead writers, of course – if it’s living writers, you’ll just be looking at the home offices where writers sit and get RSI from refreshing their retweets column and wondering whether they timed that last tweet badly because surely it should have done bigger numbers than that and would it be gauche to retweet oneself in the morning for additional likes?  So here are five homes once lived in by some very great minds, who could afford to buy these houses, because they were…
