Edinburgh ‘timewarp house’ is like stepping back in time with throwback features

A three-bedroom townhouse in New Town has gathered attention thanks to its throwback features throughout the house. Marketed by Sturrock, Armstrong & Thomson on ESPC, the Albany Street Lane property is described as a “beautifully presented contemporary mews townhouse quietly nestled in the heart of Edinburgh’s historic New Town with its own private triple L-shaped garage and south facing garden”. The living room is a blast from the past, with its Artex ceilings, cuckoo-clock and sleek oak wood furniture. However, when you reach the kitchen, it is a mix of past, present and a splash of bright blue. The kitchen island is modern and functional, but the border of checked…

The big re-opening: why it’s time for design to shine

Whether it was lockdown or the Trump administration’s disdain for supporting the arts, creativity had a few dark moments during the past 16 months, writes Turner Duckworth creative chief Sarah Moffat. Now, it’s time for creativity – and, specifically, design – to lead the charge out of our homes and into the light. The cheery colors and the retro styles of pandemic design have just been a Band-Aid — or perhaps a Welly ’Bravery Badge’ if that’s entered the lexicon yet. The truth is: design can do so much more. We are already having temperatures in the 80s, and before we know it, temperatures will be in the 90s. Hot temperatures can be much more stressful for young vegetable plants than cool temperatures. This is also the time to get all the winter weeds dug up and removed from the vegetable garden area and to spread some compost on top of the soil. Make sure newly planted trees are well staked if needed. Young trees, without a good root system, could be prone to blowing over from high winds. T-posts make good, sturdy,…

Daylight Saving Time Is Coming! Tackle These 7 Home Improvement Tasks

It’s that time of year again. Daylight saving time takes effect on Sunday, which means we’ll set our clocks forward and lose a precious hour of sleep that night. For those of us who already feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day, the thought of losing time might sound stressful. But there is a silver lining to springing forward. “Daylight saving time means more hours of sunlight and often more energy to get things done around the home,” says Dave Quandt, vice president of field operations for American Home Shield, a home warranty company. “We often put maintenance or honey-do lists off during the cold of winter for…

Tim Allen and Richard Karn of ‘Tool Time’ returning to TV

Fasten your tool belts.  Tim Allen and Richard Karn, perhaps better known as Tim “The Toolman” Taylor and Al Borland of “Tool Time” on ’90s prime-time comedy “Home Improvement,” are reuniting in a new competition show on the History Channel. The unscripted series, dubbed “Assembly Required,” has contestants go head-to-head to construct wild inventions and appliance mashups, including a combo ice melter/leaf blower, a lounger-lawn mower and something called a “BBQ bicycle,” Variety reports. It will premiere Tuesday at 10 p.m. Allen, 67, described it as a “kind of a live version of ‘Tool Time,’” to reporters at a Television Critics Association press junket on Thursday, with Karn, 65, and…
